Part Deux: The Cell Phone Evolution
More coming tomorrow.
The Evolution of the Cell Phone
I remember the first time I saw a cell phone. I think I was about about 12 or 13 years old when my parents just bought a new ‘conversion van’ and one of the bonuses was a FREE cell phone. My parents brought the van home for my brothers and I to see and when we got inside there was a phone connected to a box in a bag. I think my brothers and I were more perplexed by this cell phone than we were interested in our parents new purchase. When did you see you first cell phone and what did it look like?
Fast forward about a decade later and cell phones are more popular than ever! Everyone has one and I it goes to say that newborns are born into the world with a cell phone in their hand. The cell phone has come a long way since it first debuted. No more big and bulky bad type cell phones anymore. The first cell phones were only phones, plain and simple. Now the cell phone has evolved from a phone into a ‘smart phone’ that can do anything and everything. It is more than a phone, it is a small computer where you can play game, download apps, check you e-mail, and run a small business from the palm of your hand. Another benefit of the evolution of the cell phone was its price. The first cell phones were expensive to have and had outrageous rates per minute. Only the rich and mighty could afford them back then. Today it is more common to get a free phone if you sign up for that two year contract. Hmmm…. is that really worth it? Just make sure to do your homework so you don’t get locked into a terrible deal!
I remember my first cell phone. It was a very simple Nokia phone where I paid $50 a month for 200 anytime minutes. The trusty old Nokia phone did exactly what I needed it to back then to make emergency calls of contact my friends. Then I saw a flip phone and was like “Man those look cool” and I just had to have one. After I got a flip phone, it was no longer cool to just call people because Nextel came out with its ‘chirp’ or DirectConnect. With all of my friends switching to Nextel the only prudent move for myself was to switch carriers and be able to ‘chirp’ with my friends. I had numerous Nextel phones before I purchased what I have today. The best part of the Nextel cell phone was they were so cheap and easy to replace. I could abuse my phone, drop it in water, lose it in the mud, or whatever and find a cheap reliable replacement on eBay and just swap out its SIM card. It was perfect. I could play and not have to worry about my cell phone because it was so easy to replace if anything ever happened to it (I did got through a few different cell phones for numerous reasons).
Now today I am the proud owner of an Apple iPhone. The iPhone revolutionized and ushered in the new era of the ‘smart phone’. Boy have I evolved just like my choice in cell phones. There is only one problem! I have to be extremely careful with this phone
because you just can’t pick up a cheap replacement on eBay or Craigs List anymore. I have changed some of my ways but on occasion there is a lapse in memory or judgement and I put $399 investment at risk. There have been a few times I have been sweating it out because I didn’t know if my phone was going to make it. Even worse was the thought of having to fork over a couple hundred dollars to replace a phone and possible extend my contract with AT&T.
What is a man to do? Go back to a cheap, reliable replacement type phone like I had with Nextel or change my ways so accidents do not happen or go as far as buy insurance on my phone to protect it if anything should happen? To many choices for this man but I know I cannot go back. So it’s either be more careful or purchase insurance. My choice ………….. be more careful with my iPhone. But I have also be doing research on insurance for my iPhone and I like what I see but I am cheap and it is hard for me to thin about having to pay monthly fee for insurance I may never use (that would be a waste of money). Why pay for any type of insurance if you may never use it? I totally agree…… But what is the purpose of insurance? Basically, to protect your possessions whether it is your house, car, life, etc. Now I even more of a dilemma. Find out more of what I did in my next post!
